Volcanoes, tropical forests, cascades and sandy beaches, Basse-Terre offers some of the most beautiful landscapes of Guadeloupe. Tarzan welcomes you to explore the western part of the island during a daylong excursion, as a nature guide introduces you to its local fauna and flora. You will start the trip from the north of the island, before passing by the Guadeloupe nature park, and finish the journey at the extreme south of Basse-Terre. You will also have the opportunity to eat either directly with locals or in a restaurant from the region, the perfect way to discover the delicious dishes from Guadeloupe.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Astonishing nature <\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong>A place might never have had such a poorly chosen name as Basse-Terre\u2026 This part of Guadeloupe is indeed the home of the highest mountains of the Antilles and of the island\u2019s Volcano, La Soufri\u00e8re. With a total surface area of 842 km2<\/sup>, Basse-Terre refers to the western part of the butterfly that Guadeloupe forms. It\u2019s a long stretch of land separated from Grande-Terre, at the east, by the salty river. Like the rest of Guadeloupe, it\u2019s characterised by authentic Caribbean landscapes, with rich nature and biodiversity. If Basse-Terre was poorly documented until the early 70s, numerous studies have since shown the exceptional ecologic richness of its marine ecosystem. Basse-Terre has nonetheless more to offer than its aquatic diversity and is also home to multiple other treasures such as waterfalls, thermal springs, especially near its volcano, golden sandy beaches and a tropical rainforest covering its mountainous massif.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

Capital City of Guadeloupe<\/strong><\/p>\n

Not unlike Point-\u00e0-Pitre, an important city located in Grande-Terre, the City of Basse-Terre is one of the most historically important locations of Guadeloupe and a place that has to be visited at least once. Basse-Terre indeed refers to three different things: as previously stated, the western half of Guadeloupe, but also a municipality of the island, located in the extreme south of the archipelago, and its capital city. If the city of Basse-Terre was the judiciary and administrative centre of the island as soon as the 19th<\/sup>century, it was heavily hit by a series of destructive cyclones and stays under the threat of its volcano, which made it lose its hegemony to Point-\u00e0-Pitre. It nonetheless conserves numerous administrative and judiciary powers that make it a particularly interesting island to visit.<\/p>\n
